Door and Cabinet Pulls FAQ's

FAQ: Door and Cabinet Pulls

What is the difference between a knob and a pull?

A knob has only one fastener or screw, where as a pull requires two.

How do I know how far apart to drill holes?

The specific pull you purchase will have a “Center-to-center” measurement. This is the distance between anchor points, which is where you will need to drill holes. You may make your own template once you receive your pulls or purchase a template online.

What size of pull do I need to match my existing drill holes?

Measure the distance between your existing holes and compare this to the “center-to-center” measurement listed on the product page. If you are replacing existing pulls, you will want to find ones with the same center-to-center measurement.

Is there a standard center-to-center measurement for cabinet pulls?

American companies express center-to-center measurements in inches while European companies measure in millimeters. 3 or 5 inch drill center-to-center measurements in the US and 96 mm (about 3 ¾ inches) are standard for European companies.

Do I need to buy screws?

Some manufacturers include complementary screws when they send pulls. These screws may or may not be the proper length for your cabinet. Screws should be long enough to reach through the cabinet door and project into the pull. Most instructions should specify the width of screw necessary for your specific pull. If this measurement is not included, simply take the pull to your local hardware store and test until you find the proper width.

How do I install a cabinet pull?

  1. Measure the thickness of the cabinet drawer or door and buy the correct length of screws.
  2. Determine where you want to place the pull. Make a mark on the cabinet for each screw.
  3. Drill perpendicular to the surface where the dot is marked.
  4. Measure this distance so you can place other pulls in the same place.
  5. Continue this process until all of your holes are drilled.
  6. Insert the screws from the inside of the cabinet.
  7. Attach the pull and turn clockwise to secure.
  8. Use a screwdriver to tighten if necessary.
